Oklahoma QB Baker Mayfield"s NCAA appeal denied

Baker Mayfield will be limited to the scout team at Oklahoma this season and will not suit up for the Sooners in 2014.

The school released a statement on Tuesday that the Texas Tech transfer had his appeal denied by the NCAA after he sought immediate eligiblity this year. In a bit of surprising good news, however, Mayfield was granted a scholarship after the organization allowed Oklahoma to go over the limit of 85 scholarship this school year.

"The University of Oklahoma Athletics Department confirmed on Monday that Baker Mayfield’s appeal to the NCAA for immediate eligibility to compete during the 2014 season has been denied," the statement said. "The NCAA has granted permission to the university to exceed the financial aid limit by one so that Mayfield may be placed on a full athletics grant-in-aid."

The latter move likely means the school will be limited to just 84 football scholarships next year.

Inside Slant: Dysfunction at Michigan extends beyond sideline

» Michigan’s Hoke atop hot-seat coaches list

One of the first questions Michigan president Mark Schlissel should be asking today is this: "How will we ever get this right from play to play in a Saturday instant when we can’t even get it right between Saturday and Monday?"

He should ask it while sifting through more failures in Michigan’s concussion protocol than can be easily counted. If the school’s admitted mishandlings of quarterback Shane Morris’ concussion were fumbles on a field, they could be strung together for an award-winning blooper clip.

Except that there’s not much humor in institutional dysfunction.

Jamaal Charles lively for Chiefs against Patriots

The Chiefs are finding a boost when they want it most with the New England Patriots in town.

Jamaal Charles is active for Kansas City’s match Monday night at Arrowhead Stadium. An ankle injury forced the running back to miss last week’s 34-15 victory over the Miami Dolphins, with Knile Davis taking 32 carries for 132 yards along with a touchdown in Charles’ lack.

Charles has taken the ball only nine times for 23 yards in the 2014 season.

Meanwhile, the Chiefs will likely be without safety Eric Berry (ankle) and running back DeAnthony Thomas (hamstring), who are both inactive.

Devonte Fields says Ray Rice instance wounded draft stock

When former TCU star defensive end Devonte Fields was fired in the institution after allegedly hitting his girlfriend, he put lots of space between himself and a potential NFL future. Nevertheless, the domestic violence case of former Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice, which has focused national attention to the NFL’s treatment of such issues, has added more space, Fields considers.

"My (stock) is likely down because the Ray Rice scenario," Fields said, according to Sports Illustrated. & quot;It likely dropped me a little bit."

After his termination, Fields, the 2012 Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year, tried to transfer to Stephen F. Austin, but couldn’t get a required waiver, and finally registered at Trinity Valley Community College. Based on TVCC trainer Brad Smiley, Fields means to transfer back into FBS college football next year, although he could hold draft qualifications as early as next year. Fields told SI he’s still undecided on his future strategies. He had 10 sacks and 18.5 tackles for loss as a Horned Frogs freshman in 2012, but missed most of 2013 with an injury. The event that resulted in his dismissal from TCU happened in July.

According to SI, Fields played slack football Saturday for TVCC, jogging on many plays. The report also mentioned an NFL scout who proposed Fields may not be drafted in any way, and questioned whether the case could even change Fields’ chances of receiving an invitation to the NFL Scouting Combine in February.

Report: Jimbo Fisher no help to Jameis Winston"s stock

Not that Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston wanted any aid in damaging his standing with NFL scouts as a draft prospect, but FSU coach Jimbo Fisher will seemingly be a detriment to Winston’s scouting assessment at the same time.

» Bills QB Manuel mentoring Winston

NFL personnel guys possess a definite memory of Fisher supplying them having a enthusiastic recommendation of former LSU quarterback JaMarcus Russell when Fisher was the Tigers’ offensive coordinator, and given Russell’s swift ouster in the league, scouts are unlikely to be purchasing what Fisher might be selling regarding Winston, according to Sports Illustrated.

"He told the whole NFL that JaMarcus Russell was an excellent child," a source familiar with the situation told SI. & quot;He was a [expletive] then."

Jonathan Dwyer charged with attacking wife

PHOENIX — Arizona Cardinals running back Jonathan Dwyer continues to be officially charged with attacking his wife in two arguments in July at their Phoenix flat.

An indictment freely released late Friday charges Dwyer with felony aggravated assault and eight misdemeanors, including assault, criminal damage and disorderly conduct.

Researchers say Dwyer broke his wife’s nose using a head butt during a July 21 discussion and participated in a dispute the next day in which he hit his wife and threw a shoe at his 17-month-old son, who was not injured.

Dwyer was arrested on Sept. 17 on suspicion of aggravated assault against his son, but the indictment does not charge him with any offenses related to the kid.

BYU DL says he hears Utah State QB Keeton will redshirt

It remains to be seen when Utah State star quarterback Chuckie Keeton will get his next centering for the Aggies, but word across the BYU program — which faces Utah State this week — is that Keeton will sit the remaining season using a medical redshirt.

"We heard something different today. I heard they are really medical redshirting him, as of now," said BYU defensive lineman Remington Peck. & quot; That may vary. If he’s there, clearly, itis a whole different deal along with his legs. He is great in the floor. You had need to prepare more to get a two dimensional quarterback. … As far as we know, they declared last night they’re medical redshirting him, but I still believe we have to get ready just in case he does not."

it’d be less than wise to presume an opposing defensive lineman has certain info on a player who wears a distinct jersey, but given that the teams play in four days, it would not take long for word on something like that to go from the Utah State locker room to BYU’s. Peck made his comments on BYUtv.

Jimbo Fisher takes issue with Dave Doeren"s criticisms

It may not be wise to get trainers Jimbo Fisher of Florida State and Dave Doeren of North Carolina State in a room together anytime soon.

Doeren took several shots at FSU in the aftermath of the Seminoles’ 56-41 win over the Wolfpack on Saturday:

1. & quot; There was some incredible keeping by their offensive line that seemingly is invisible."

2. & quot; The rate we’d (in the first quarter) was operating until all of the wild drop-down things were going on as well as the clock kept stopping. You know the refs can not do anything about that, but it is terrible the way the pace gets slowed down by these harms. We went quickly in the first quarter; I estimate there were no imitation injuries."

Aaron Rodgers told everyone to R-E-L-A-X last week, and that turned out to be great guidance. In the end, even in the eternally unpredictable NFL — the Arizona Cardinals and Cincinnati Bengals, once league laughingstocks, are now the sole undefeated teams of 2014, for instance — some things do not change all that much.

Every year, September is the month that deceive us more than any other. Seldom do teams go wire to wire using their dominance, as the Seahawks and Broncos did last season. A lot more common is the kind of gut-churning unevenness we have already seen in 2014: how the Dolphins can look dominant in a single match, disoriented the next, and then dominant again in London after an unusually tumultuous week, or how Kirk Cousins can ignite and extinguish a quarterback controversy in Washington within the period of four days.

But while teams are still figuring out their identities early in the season, quarterback is the only position at which catch judgments are inevitable — and, possibly, the closest to reality.

Raiders" Derek Carr harm, replaced by Matt McGloin

A miserable day for the Oakland Raiders was exacerbated when quarterback Derek Carr was sidelined with an obvious left ankle/knee injury in the 3rd quarter.

Carr’s knee was turned at the conclusion of a scramble. Despite a heavy limp, he remained in for one more play before it became clear that he could not place any weight on the leg.

He was quickly sent to the locker room for X rays and is formally questionable to return.

The rookie authored an impressive opening touchdown drive vs. the Miami Dolphins, but neglected to transfer the offense over the next two quarters.

Su"a Cravens outshines Leonard Williams in USC success

Ameer Abdullah runs for 208 yards, 3 TDs in Nebraska"s triumph

Another week, another 200-yard game for Nebraska senior tailback Ameer Abdullah.

Abdullah ran for 208 yards and three TDs on 22 carries — his second 200-yard game in a row and his third of the season — as the Huskers smashed host Illinois 45-14.

Abdullah helped Nebraska — which plays at Michigan State next week — rush for 458 yards and roll up 624 complete yards. He’s got a state-top 833 rushing yards this year, to go with eight rushing TDs.

Abdullah started the season using a 232-yard performance against Florida Atlantic, subsequently rushed for 229 yards last week in a win over Miami. He now has four 200-yard games in his career, including two against Illinois; he rambled for 225 against the Illini last season.

Brandon Harris outplays Anthony Jennings in LSU triumph

As much as LSU head coach Les Miles continues to be coy about his plans for the quarterback position, there was nothing coy about how he used the pair of Brandon Harris and Anthony Jennings on Saturday night.

The freshman Harris, by every sign, is taking on the task.

Harris completed 11 of 14 passes for 178 yards, including three touchdowns, in a 63-7 trouncing of New Mexico State. He also added 36 yards rushing and two more touchdowns to the floor, flashing the kind of double-threat ability that made him a four star recruit rated as the country ‘s No. 5 quarterback out of high school.

Jennings definitely did his part to terminate the contest, throwing as many interceptions (two) as he’d ends. Jennings, a sophomore, has started every match this year, including Saturday, but Miles never created him as the clear choice in the position. Now, it seems Harris is the clear choice.

Brady Hoke said he did not understand QB Shane Morris was harm

As if there was not already enough heat on Michigan coach Brady Hoke, he’s hearing criticism for his handling of quarterback Shane Morris in the Wolverines’ loss to Minnesota.

Morris, who made his second career start Saturday, left the field on a cart following the match. He received a big hit — which appeared to be a hit to the head but was not called — after a pass effort early in the fourth quarter. He seemed to be somewhat dazed and undoubtedly was hobbling following the play. However he stayed in the match for another pass effort before he was replaced by Devin Gardner.

A few plays later, Morris went back to the match after Gardner lost his helmet on a run. He given away, then came off the field once and for all.

Hoke was inquired in his postgame news conference why Morris stayed in the match after he seemed to be damage.

Clemson"s Deshaun Watson throws for 6 TDs in first career start

Real freshman quarterback Deshaun Watson made his first start for Clemson on Saturday, and he set the bar fairly high.

Watson threw for 435 yards as well as a school-record six touchdowns as the Tigers beaten North Carolina, 50-35. The six TD passes additionally establish an ACC record for just about any league quarterback making his starting debut.

He finished 27-of-36 (75 percent), and six of his completions went to sophomore wide receiver Mike Williams; those receptions were great for 122 yards and two touchdowns. Clemson ended with 528 total yards and was 10-of-18 on third down conversions.

Watson threw two TD passes in the very first half, both covering at least 50 yards; he pitched two in the 3rd quarter and another two in the fourth quarter. Five of the six TD passes covered at least 24 yards and four were at least 30 yards.

Todd Gurley runs for career-high 208 yards for Georgia

Georgia running back Todd Gurley set an emphatic stamp on his location as college football’s top running back Saturday with a commanding performance against competing Tennessee in a 35-32 Bulldogs win.

He rushed to get a career-high 208 yards and two touchdowns on 28 carries. But just as significant as his stat totals was this: when the Bulldogs wanted him most, with Tennessee within three points in the fourth quarter, Gurley was at his absolute finest.

The UGA coaching staff rested Gurley commonly in the middle portion of the sport, giving freshman Sony Michel activity in the very first half and another freshman, Nick Chubb, wide-ranging amount of time in the 2nd half after Michel went out with the injury. The effect was a Gurley who seemed just as unique in the fourth quarter as he did in the very first.

And that is exactly what a fresh Gurley looked like using the match still in doubt:

TCU QB Trevone Boykin has rather an experience on an errant snap, picking up the tumbling pigskin and then throw it to the crossbar of the goal post. Fortunate for TCU, an SMU defensive lineman jumped offside prior to the play began; 5-yard penalty and replay the down. Serious disgrace averted.

Randy Cross still sees the San Francisco 49ers closely between his broadcasting duties because, in the end, the three Super Bowl titles he won as an associate of the offensive line irrevocably tie him to the franchise and his former teammates. Cross says he’s more dispassionate now. He was close to former owner Eddie DeBartolo Jr., but as DeBartolo’s incredible time at the helm recedes farther into recollection, thus does Cross’ psychological bond to the 49ers.

Still, when Cross and his former teammates have discussed the 49ers before few weeks, it is been about exactly the same thing that appears to get coach Jim Harbaugh befuddled during a 1-2 beginning in which San Francisco has played well in the very first half and sagged disastrously in the second.

Sky Sports expands deal with NFL five years

LONDON — The NFL is getting set to play its ninth regular season match in London on Sunday when the Oakland Raiders play host to the Miami Dolphins at their adopted home of Wembley Stadium.

While the long term target for international growth said by Commissioner Roger Goodell is a long-term team in London, the NFL took a critical short term measure in britain on Thursday with the announcement of a brand new TV deal.

Sky Sports, which has broadcast live NFL games in britain since 1995, has extended its deal by five years, adding the rights to air Monday Night Football. Together with the inclusion of Monday Night Football (played in the first hours of Tuesday morning to get a UK audience), the broadcaster will give British NFL enthusiasts the opportunity to look at as many as 80 live matches annually.

Sky Sports’ coverage may also contain all matches in the NFL’s International Series as teams go to great britain for regular season match ups, which has seen sell out competitions at Wembley since 2007.

Michigan State"s Jeremy Langford not stressed by slow start

Michigan State’s Jeremy Langford ran for 1,422 yards and 18 TDs last season, but he’s off to a slow start this season.

Langford (6-foot-1, 208 pounds), a senior, was the country’s No. 5 returning rusher, but he’s handled only 203 yards through three matches; his per-game average of 67.7 yards ranks 13th in the Big Ten. He additionally has only two TDs.

Langford suffered a sprained ankle in the Spartans’ Aug. 29 opener against Jacksonville State, but he has not missed any matches and is not using that as an explanation.

"It Is football — you are planning to take hits and get dinged up here and there," Langford told mlive.com. "So I am all right. I am willing to go."

I do not consider there is an Andrew Luck-quality quarterback now playing college football, and we will not see a gift like the Indianapolis Colts quarterback for a long time. However, Oregon QB Marcus Mariota is among the more intriguing quarterbacks we have found in several years.

Mariota features a double-risk skill set similar to Johnny Manziel, the Heisman Trophy winner from Texas A&M who now plays for the Cleveland Browns. The 2014 NFL Draft first-round pick quite almost went to Oregon, and then-Oregon trainer and present Philadelphia Eagles trainer Chip Kelly said losing out on Manziel, "busted my heart." Rather, Kelly could get a commitment from Mariota in the exact same recruiting group.

Occasionally it is rough to find comparisons for players who run the wideopen Oregon offense, but I reached out to five NFL staff executives to determine which present NFL quarterback does Mariota remind them of as a player.

Derek Jeter offers wisdom to fellow New York icon Eli Manning

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., and EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — As Derek Jeter sits at his locker in a visiting clubhouse, he’s mired in an 0-for-24 slump that will contain four more hitless at bats before it finishes. The shortstop/captain’s New York Yankees career, spanning two decades and including five World Series championships, will finish before October.

One day before, Eli Manning had thrown two interceptions as the New York Giants lost their second straight match to open the season, 25-14 to the Arizona Cardinals, rekindling memories of an 0-6 beginning a year ago. One on-line headline asked: "Is (the) curtain close on Eli Manning’s career?"

Purdue leads the way when it comes to NFL wages by school
