Here Is the backstory to among the significant minutes of Week 13, the San Diego Chargers’ frenzied final-minute road win over the Baltimore Ravens. The Chargers’ thrilling triumph, along with the finest comeback triumph in Jacksonville Jaguars history as well as the Green Bay Packers’ fending away from the powerful New England Patriots are nominees for the GMC Never Say Never Minute of the week. Cast your vote for the GMC Never Say Never Minutes of Week 13.

Philip Rivers

One could easily create a claim that Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers is having an MVP season. The astonishing seasons of Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers and New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady — not to mention the havoc-wreaking ridiculousness that’s J.J. Watt’s campaign for the Houston Texans — tend to overshadow what Rivers has done this season. Rivers hammered that point home having a come-from-behind road win against a playoff-quality team, a success that force the Chargers to the center of the AFC playoff race.

Lookout: I do not understand if Oregon"s Marcus Mariota is alpha male

It Is the occupation of NFL scouts, and by extension, the general managers who supervise them, to discover defects in school possibilities.

They all have them — some more noticeable than others — as well as a failure to identify them accurately can establish itself into a wasted draft pick. Therefore, even the top-notch prospects that are considered surefire first-round draft picks will get their share of examination, even supposing it’s more microscopic — or as the case might be, myopic — in nature.

Enter Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota, who has 24 touchdowns to only one interception this season, but according to one NFL scout may be overly fine for the NFL. Yep, overly fine.

"Like in case you hit him in the gut, he might apologize to you personally," the scout told Sports Illustrated’s Interior Read. & quot;I simply do not understand if he is that alpha male that you are looking for. The child’s kind of a fly on the wall type of man. Physically, he is actually gifted, but it is likely to have some time. In the event you are expecting him to come in and be your savior year one, I do not believe that is going to be it."

Ray Rice"s appeal hearing on suspension set for Nov. 5-6

Ray Rice may have his appeal on his indefinite suspension heard in just over a couple of weeks.

NFL Media’s Albert Breer reported Tuesday that the former Baltimore Ravens running back’s hearing is set for Nov. 5 and 6, according to a union source.

Rice was initially suspended two games to get a domestic violence incident involving his then-fiancee at an Atlantic City casino in February. The suspension became indefinite in September after TMZ posted a video that revealed Rice eye-catching Janay Rice in a Revel Casino lift, causing her to hit her head on a railing and get rid of consciousness.

Prior to the release of the TMZ footage, the NFL announced far-reaching developments to the league’s Individual Actions Policy. In a letter to league owners, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell apologized for his first choice in the Rice case.

Vernon Adams could be next in line of small-school NFL QBs

It’s well established that a quarterback doesn’t need to be from a major college program to find success in the NFL.

The list of QBs that rose from outside college football’s power conferences — or even Division I in some cases — within the past decade or so includes Joe Flacco (Delaware), Colin Kaepernick (Nevada), Ben Roethlisberger (Miami Ohio) and Tony Romo (Eastern Illinois). The latest signal-caller trying to follow their lead is New England Patriots rookie Jimmy Garoppolo (Eastern Illinois), a second-round pick earlier this year who threw his first career touchdown pass Monday night in relief of Tom Brady.

Who could be next in the pipeline from the less-heralded ranks?

Devonte Fields says Ray Rice instance wounded draft stock

When former TCU star defensive end Devonte Fields was fired in the institution after allegedly hitting his girlfriend, he put lots of space between himself and a potential NFL future. Nevertheless, the domestic violence case of former Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice, which has focused national attention to the NFL’s treatment of such issues, has added more space, Fields considers.

"My (stock) is likely down because the Ray Rice scenario," Fields said, according to Sports Illustrated. & quot;It likely dropped me a little bit."

After his termination, Fields, the 2012 Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year, tried to transfer to Stephen F. Austin, but couldn’t get a required waiver, and finally registered at Trinity Valley Community College. Based on TVCC trainer Brad Smiley, Fields means to transfer back into FBS college football next year, although he could hold draft qualifications as early as next year. Fields told SI he’s still undecided on his future strategies. He had 10 sacks and 18.5 tackles for loss as a Horned Frogs freshman in 2012, but missed most of 2013 with an injury. The event that resulted in his dismissal from TCU happened in July.

According to SI, Fields played slack football Saturday for TVCC, jogging on many plays. The report also mentioned an NFL scout who proposed Fields may not be drafted in any way, and questioned whether the case could even change Fields’ chances of receiving an invitation to the NFL Scouting Combine in February.

BYU DL says he hears Utah State QB Keeton will redshirt

It remains to be seen when Utah State star quarterback Chuckie Keeton will get his next centering for the Aggies, but word across the BYU program — which faces Utah State this week — is that Keeton will sit the remaining season using a medical redshirt.

"We heard something different today. I heard they are really medical redshirting him, as of now," said BYU defensive lineman Remington Peck. & quot; That may vary. If he’s there, clearly, itis a whole different deal along with his legs. He is great in the floor. You had need to prepare more to get a two dimensional quarterback. … As far as we know, they declared last night they’re medical redshirting him, but I still believe we have to get ready just in case he does not."

it’d be less than wise to presume an opposing defensive lineman has certain info on a player who wears a distinct jersey, but given that the teams play in four days, it would not take long for word on something like that to go from the Utah State locker room to BYU’s. Peck made his comments on BYUtv.

Peterson accused of injuring another son; attorney refutes report

KHOU-TV in Houston reported Monday night that Vikings running back Adrian Peterson was accused of injuring another son in June 2013. According to the report, Peterson supposedly disciplined his son for "cussing into a sib," resulting in a injury to the 4-year old boy’s head.

The boy’s mother allegedly filed a report with Texas Child Protective Services. The outcomes of any investigation are uncertain and no charges have now been filed in the case.

In a text to NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport, Peterson’s attorney Rusty Hardin wrote, "The claims were made over this past year to CPS and law enforcement with no action was taken. Plus there was an adult witness within the vehicle and she flatly denied that Adrian caused any harm to the son."

Hardin also released a statement: "The claim of some other investigation into Adrian Peterson is not really accurate. That is not a brand new claim, it is one that’s unsubstantiated and was shopped around to authorities in two states over last year and nothing came of it. An adult witness adamantly insists Adrian did nothing improper along with his son. There’s absolutely no on-going or new investigation."

Penn State should get jolt from NCAA dropping bowl ban

Monday’s announcement from the NCAA regarding Penn State was a big deal, and I was very happy to see it. In fact, I think the NCAA should have made the announcement a couple years ago.

The NCAA revealed on Monday that it would lift the bowl ban against Penn State this season and restore the school’s full allotment of scholarships in 2015.

To me, the Jerry Sandusky case, which led to the sanctions against Penn State, was never put into proper context by the NCAA. It took a criminal case and made it into an NCAA case, levying a four-year bowl ban and cutting the school’s scholarships, among other sanctions. In doing so, the NCAA punished Penn State players who decided to stay at the school even though they had a chance to transfer and those who would attend the school in years to come.

Wisconsin"s Melvin Gordon held to just 38 rushing yards in win

Wisconsin tailback Melvin Gordon had good production but relatively few carries last week in a loss to LSU. That wasn’t the case Saturday, when he was basically shut down by FCS foe Western Illinois.

Gordon had 17 carries, but they went for just 38 yards in a 37-3 win over the Leathernecks. He had 8 yards on nine carries in the first half, which ended with the Badgers leading just 9-3. Wisconsin took control in the second half, but it was because of the arm of Tanner McEvoy, who threw for 283 yards and three TDs.

Gordon (6-foot-1, 209 yards) was seen as a Heisman candidate before the season, but he’ll need to ramp up his production in the next few weeks to get back into the Heisman discussion. He did have four receptions for 22 yards and a TD on Saturday; it was just the second TD reception of his career. Gordon had just one reception last season.

Gordon did have a 21-yard run in the second half, but that was his only notable carry of the day. Gordon was said to be bothered by a minor hip injury, but he had one more carry against Western Illinois than he did against LSU; against the Tigers, though, he rushed for 140 yards.
