Devonte Fields says Ray Rice instance wounded draft stock

When former TCU star defensive end Devonte Fields was fired in the institution after allegedly hitting his girlfriend, he put lots of space between himself and a potential NFL future. Nevertheless, the domestic violence case of former Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice, which has focused national attention to the NFL’s treatment of such issues, has added more space, Fields considers.

"My (stock) is likely down because the Ray Rice scenario," Fields said, according to Sports Illustrated. & quot;It likely dropped me a little bit."

After his termination, Fields, the 2012 Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year, tried to transfer to Stephen F. Austin, but couldn’t get a required waiver, and finally registered at Trinity Valley Community College. Based on TVCC trainer Brad Smiley, Fields means to transfer back into FBS college football next year, although he could hold draft qualifications as early as next year. Fields told SI he’s still undecided on his future strategies. He had 10 sacks and 18.5 tackles for loss as a Horned Frogs freshman in 2012, but missed most of 2013 with an injury. The event that resulted in his dismissal from TCU happened in July.

According to SI, Fields played slack football Saturday for TVCC, jogging on many plays. The report also mentioned an NFL scout who proposed Fields may not be drafted in any way, and questioned whether the case could even change Fields’ chances of receiving an invitation to the NFL Scouting Combine in February.
