Here Is the backstory to among the significant minutes of Week 13, the San Diego Chargers’ frenzied final-minute road win over the Baltimore Ravens. The Chargers’ thrilling triumph, along with the finest comeback triumph in Jacksonville Jaguars history as well as the Green Bay Packers’ fending away from the powerful New England Patriots are nominees for the GMC Never Say Never Minute of the week. Cast your vote for the GMC Never Say Never Minutes of Week 13.

Philip Rivers

One could easily create a claim that Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers is having an MVP season. The astonishing seasons of Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers and New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady — not to mention the havoc-wreaking ridiculousness that’s J.J. Watt’s campaign for the Houston Texans — tend to overshadow what Rivers has done this season. Rivers hammered that point home having a come-from-behind road win against a playoff-quality team, a success that force the Chargers to the center of the AFC playoff race.

DaVaris Daniels announces he"s leaving Notre Dame

Notre Dame wide receiver DaVaris Daniels, who was suspended in August as the school investigated alleged academic fraud, tweeted Tuesday that he is done at Notre Dame.

Not looking to transfer. ND was my team. ND is where my heart was. Unfortunately my time here is done, ready for my future.

His father, former NFL defensive end Phillip Daniels, also announced the news on Twitter and seemed to express displeasure with the length of the process.

Washington State fires special-teams coach after loss

There are good college football weekends and there are bad college football weekends.

Then there’s what happened to Washington State.

The Cougars set a number of FBS and Pac-12 records behind quarterback Connor Halliday on Saturday but lost a heartbreaker to California 60-59 thanks to a missed field goal as time expired from point-blank range.

For that last reason and more, Mike Leach decided to make a change and let special-teams coach Eric Russell go on Monday. Russell’s duties will be divided up among the rest of the staff.

Arizona State tops USC on Hail Mary to complete comeback

Nine down, three minutes to go and on the road. No problem if you ask Mike Bercovici.

Arizona State used a 54-yard Hail Mary catch by Jaelen Strong to cap off an improbable comeback at the Coliseum and beat USC 38-34 to cause even more chaos in the Pac-12.

"I’m about to have a heart attack," Sun Devils head coach Todd Graham said on Fox after the game.

He wasn’t the only one.

2015 NFL Draft to be held in Chicago

The 2015 NFL Draft will be held April 30-May 2 at the Auditorium Theatre of Roosevelt University in Chicago, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced Thursday.

"We are excited to have fans from throughout the midwest experience the NFL Draft," Goodell said in a statement announcing the draft location. "We look forward to returning the event to the city of Chicago and working with the city, Choose Chicago, and the Chicago Sports Commission to create a week-long celebration of football for our fans. Mayor Emanuel and the city of Chicago presented us with numerous ways to enhance the Draft experience for our fans and incoming players."

The Windy City beat out Los Angeles, which was the other finalist in the running to host the league’s marquee event next year. Various sites across the country expressed interest in hosting the affair but couldn’t beat out a strong bid from Chicago that was backed by Emanuel.

"Chicago is pleased to welcome the 2015 NFL Draft to America’s heartland," Emanuel said in a statement. "Next year, NFL fans from across the country will travel here or tune in as the future of their team is decided in Chicago. We look forward to working with the Chicago Bears, the NFL, and our neighborhood partners to make this an event that highlights our world class city and reinvests in our communities."

Inquire 5: Who does Marcus Mariota of Oregon remind you of?

nfl.use(“nfl-video”, function (Y) (!supportsFlashVideo && !supportsHTML5)), srcId = “vid1″, srcNodeId = “#”+srcId, srcNode = Y.one(srcNodeId), width = Number(“615″), height = Number(“346″), vp, w, rsH, orH, updateSize; if(requireSizeAdjustment) updateSize = function() w = srcNode.get(‘offsetWidth’); vp.get(“boundingBox”).setStyles( width: w + ‘px’, height: Math.round(w*(9/16)) + ‘px’ ); ; width = srcNode.get(‘offsetWidth’); height = Math.round(width*(9/16)); rsH = Y.on(“resize”, updateSize, window); orH = Y.on(“orientationchange”, updateSize, window); nfl.videoplayers = nfl.videoplayers );

I do not consider there is an Andrew Luck-quality quarterback now playing college football, and we will not see a gift like the Indianapolis Colts quarterback for a long time. However, Oregon QB Marcus Mariota is among the more intriguing quarterbacks we have found in several years.

Mariota features a double-risk skill set similar to Johnny Manziel, the Heisman Trophy winner from Texas A&M who now plays for the Cleveland Browns. The 2014 NFL Draft first-round pick quite almost went to Oregon, and then-Oregon trainer and present Philadelphia Eagles trainer Chip Kelly said losing out on Manziel, "busted my heart." Rather, Kelly could get a commitment from Mariota in the exact same recruiting group.

Occasionally it is rough to find comparisons for players who run the wideopen Oregon offense, but I reached out to five NFL staff executives to determine which present NFL quarterback does Mariota remind them of as a player.

Arkansas State player falsifies fall on fake punt

The Arkansas State football team has lost two matches in a row and consumed a 41-20 beating in the hands of Miami Saturday, but nobody can accuse the Red Wolves of lacking enjoyable.

Confusion reigned on this fake punt gone awry against the Hurricanes Saturday, but nothing was more perplexing than ASU wide receiver Booker Mays, lined up in the nearside slot location, falling as if having a heart attack in the catch of the ball.

Fred G. Sanford would be proud.
