Ray Rice wins appeal, instantly permitted return

Former Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice has taken a huge step nearer to a potential return to the NFL.

NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport first reported Friday that Rice won his appeal and has had his indefinite suspension in the league overturned, according to a source directly associated with the specific situation. Rice is instantly eligible to return by winning his appeal, Rapoport reports.

The NFL Media Group got Judge Barbara S. Jones’ overview and selection:

"In this arbitration, the NFL claims that Commissioner Goodell was misled when he disciplined Rice the first time. Because, after careful consideration of most the evidence, I’m not swayed that Rice lied to, or misled, the NFL at his June interview, I find the indefinite suspension was an abuse of discretion and should be vacated."

Vikings deactivate Adrian Peterson forever

Upon further thought, the Minnesota Vikings have determined running back Adrian Peterson is not going to stay an active person in the group during his present legal problem.

Less than two days after activating Peterson for Sunday’s match in New Orleans, the Vikings reversed course by releasing a statement early Wednesday describing that Peterson is likely to be put in the Exempt/Commissioner’s Permission list. Which will need Peterson to stay away from all team tasks while he takes care of his legal proceedings.

Peterson was deactivated for last week’s loss to the New England Patriots after being indicted on a charge of dangerous or negligent harm to your kid. Your decision to activate Peterson for this week came under significant criticism, including a call in the governor of Minnesota to suspend Peterson.

The statement suggests that Peterson will remain deactivated until his legal proceedings are solved. Peterson comes with an initial hearing for his charges on October 8. The Montgomery County District Attorney suggested formerly a trial was not likely until 2015.

USC AD Pat Haden fined $25,000 by Pac-12 for sideline actions

On Sunday night, Pat Haden apologized for his actions on the sideline of the USC-Stanford game, but it was clear to everybody involved that the incident was not over.

On Monday morning, the Pac-12 office got involved in the matter by fining the Trojans’ athletic director $25,000 and reprimanding him for the incident.

"The conduct by USC Athletics Director Pat Haden was inappropriate," Pac-12 commissioner Larry Scott said in a release. "Such actions by an administrator in attempt to influence the officiating, and ultimately the outcome of a contest, will not be tolerated.

"The conduct by both Sarkisian and Haden were in clear violation of our conference’s Standards of Conduct policy. We appreciate the public apology and recognition of the errors in judgment, as well as Pat Haden’s self-imposed two-game sideline ban. We took this into consideration as we determined the discipline. Nonetheless, the actions fell short of our expectation of our head coaches and athletic directors as role models for our student-athletes and important leaders of our institutions."

Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany: Don"t make judgments yet

Much like an athletic director giving a vote of confidence to his beleaguered coach, Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany has given one to his beleaguered league.

"The narrative is still developing for each team and for each of the conferences," Delany told The Associated Press. "It will develop into a full narrative by Dec. 7, not Sept. 7."

Saturday was not a good day for the Big Ten. The conference was involved in each of the three national marquee games, and league teams lost all three: Michigan State to Oregon, Michigan to Notre Dame and Ohio State to Virginia Tech.

In addition, two Big Ten teams fell to MAC opponents: Purdue to Central Michigan and Northwestern to Northern Illinois. And most of the league’s wins were uninspiring, too: Penn State beat Akron 21-3, Minnesota held off Middle Tennessee 35-24, Iowa rallied to beat Ball State 17-13 in the final two minutes, Maryland beat USF 24-17, Nebraska scored with 20 seconds left on an incredible catch-and-run by Ameer Abdullah to subdue FCS opponent McNeese State 31-24 and Illinois fended off Western Kentucky 41-34. And on closer inspection, wins by Rutgers over FCS member Howard (38-25) and Wisconsin over Western Illinois (37-3 after leading just 9-3 at halftime) weren’t that impressive, either.
