Ex-GM: Team judged OTs in draft off performance vs. Joey Bosa

NFL Media analysts had been told that Ohio State sophomore Joey Bosa is the nation’s best "combo" defensive end. Now comes news from former Cleveland Browns general manager Phil Savage, the executive director of the Reese’s Senior Bowl, that one NFL team is judging offensive tackle prospects off their work against Bosa.

OSU’s Joey Bosa might be best DE in country. One NFL org told me they judged every OT in the 2014 #NFLDraft on his performance vs. Bosa.

Earlier this month, NFL Media analysts reported that the opinion of three NFL scouts who attended the Big Ten Championship Game was that Bosa does everything required of a defensive end equally well — plays the run and rushes the passer — and that there appear to be no concerns about his motor.

Will Muschamp hired as Auburn"s defensive coordinator

Will Muschamp, who was fired as Florida’s coach last month, will remain in the SEC as Auburn’s new defensive coordinator.

"He’s one of the best in the business, if not the best in the business," Auburn coach Gus Malzahn said of Muschamp at Saturday’s introductory news conference.

Muschamp’s last official day at Florida was Nov. 29, when he coached the Gators in their loss to Florida State, which means he spent less than two weeks out of work. Numerous reports indicate his salary will be $1.6 million, meaning he will be the highest-paid assistant in college football. He reportedly also was a candidate for the Houston head-coaching job.

"We’ve been pretty good where we’ve been, but we’ve also had a bunch of good players," Muschamp said Saturday of the defenses he has coordinated.

NFL declares Week 15 flex scheduling, Week 16 Saturday slate

As the regular season nears its final month, playoff races continue to heat up across the NFL. As a result of adaptive scheduling, more supporters throughout the nation will have the ability to see these significant competitions.

The league on Sunday declared the finalization of both Week 15’s flex program and Week 16’s Saturday doubleheader. The Week 15 1 p.m. ET competition between the Cincinnati Bengals and Cleveland Browns and the 4:25 p.m. ET match between the Minnesota Vikings and Detroit Lions will both be broadcast on FOX.

The reversal of network — a fresh element of the flex scheduling procedure called "cross-bending" — for the Cincinnati-Cleveland game brings an instate competition into a bigger audience as both teams fight for supremacy in a closely contested AFC North.

A classic NFC North matchup between recognizable foes takes the 4:25 p.m. time slot when the Vikings travel to Ford Field to take on the upstart Lions.

Ankle injury sidelines Lions" Calvin Johnson vs. Falcons

The Detroit Lions will again be without star receiver Calvin Johnson.

Megatron tested out his ankle pregame, running around the field at Wembley Stadium in London, where the Lions will take to the Atlanta Falcons, but the wide receiver was not able to play. NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported the Lions’ hope was to get Johnson a complete month of rest, per a source told of the Lions’ selection.

it’ll be the third consecutive missed match for Johnson. Detroit, 5-2, won the preceding two tussles. Yet, Matthew Stafford as well as the Lions’ offense have fought without their Pro Bowl receiver.

There was some confidence that Megatron, who had been restricted in practice all week, could play before the international crowd. Finally, the Lions determined the most wise move was to give their playmaker an additional week of rest. They expect to have Johnson back in the field following their Week 9 bye.

Ray Rice appeal hearing set for November

It appears as though a potential resolution to Ray Rice‘s suspension appeal will not come for another month.

NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reports Rice’s hearing is tentatively set for November, per a source apprised of the situation.

The league on Oct. 2 announced NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell appointed former U.S. District Judge Barbara S. Jones to hear and decide the appeal filed by the NFL Players Association on behalf of Rice.

Rice was suspended indefinitely by the NFL in September shortly after his release by the Baltimore Ravens.

Oregon State assistant Mark Banker upset with USC"s linemen

Two Oregon State defensive tackles suffered knee injuries in last Saturday’s loss to USC, and Beavers defensive coordinator Mark Banker has questioned USC’s blocking techniques.

Starter Jalen Grimble will miss up to a month and backup Noke Tago is out for the season because of injuries they sustained against the Trojans. Banker said both of the injuries occurred on chop blocks that weren’t called; Grimble was injured on USC’s first offensive play of the second half and Tago was lost on USC’s second possession of the half.

"You don’t know if it was done on purpose or not," Banker told The Oregonian, "but I just think the technique was questionable."

Banker said that when Oregon State coaches scouted USC, they didn’t notice a tendency for the Trojans to chop block.

Jonathan Dwyer charged with attacking wife

PHOENIX — Arizona Cardinals running back Jonathan Dwyer continues to be officially charged with attacking his wife in two arguments in July at their Phoenix flat.

An indictment freely released late Friday charges Dwyer with felony aggravated assault and eight misdemeanors, including assault, criminal damage and disorderly conduct.

Researchers say Dwyer broke his wife’s nose using a head butt during a July 21 discussion and participated in a dispute the next day in which he hit his wife and threw a shoe at his 17-month-old son, who was not injured.

Dwyer was arrested on Sept. 17 on suspicion of aggravated assault against his son, but the indictment does not charge him with any offenses related to the kid.

Florida"s Will Muschamp atop hot seat trainers list

We Are still in September and there already is one training vacancy (SMU). While it is incredibly improbable another occupation will come open this month, there are likely to be a dozen or so that come start this season — and odds are, the jobs that come open will be on this list.

We Are not saying every one of these men will go, but trainers are hired to be fired as well as the job security of those 10 are the most tenuous among the 128 trainers in the FBS positions. By no means, however, is this a whole record of the hot seat trainers. All these are only the men to the hottest seats this week.

This list will probably be updated on a weekly basis as trainers’ fortunes rise and fall.

Bob Stoops tops SEC again as Oklahoma rolls over Tennessee

For months and months, Bob Stoops talked regarding the SEC.

On Saturday, Big Game Bob got to back up those big words using a resounding 34-10 triumph over Tennessee that solidified the Sooners as College Football Playoff competitors.

Quarterback Trevor Knight was once again the driver for the Oklahoma offense. He put up 308 yards throughout the atmosphere, using a touchdown and interception, in addition to 17 yards and another score in the floor.

Running back Keith Ford was the primary ball carrier for the Sooners but was held to only 3.7 yards a carry on the nighttime. He scored a touchdown but was afterwards taken off the field having an unspecified injury. Tight end Blake Bell flashed some NFL possibility in the position and completed the match with three catches for 52 yards.
