Wisconsin hires Paul Chryst as head coach

Wisconsin made Paul Chryst’s homecoming official on Wednesday, announcing he is the Badgers’ new head coach.

Reports in the past week indicated Chryst, who had served as head coach at Pitt, would return to Madison. Wednesday was the earliest Wisconsin could hire Chryst because of university policies.

The Baltimore Ravens and Miami Dolphins met Sunday in a matchup of wouldbe AFC rivals. Joe Philbin’s squad was totally coordinated in a 28-13 Ravens success.

1. Elvis Dumervil was the most effective player in the field Sunday, and Joe Flacco was a close second. Let us begin with all the Ravens’ defense. Despite losing two more cornerbacks to harm (Danny Gorrer and Anthony Levine), the Ravens just gave up three points in the last three quarters as a result of ferocious pass rush. Dumervil controlled Dallas Thomas for 3.5 sacks, quitting multiple drives. Terrell Suggs added 1.5 sacks. Ryan Tannehill regularly held the ball a long time, getting knocked down nine times.

2. Flacco has played near perfect soccer the previous couple of weeks. Torrey Smith was quite small due to harm (no catches) but Flacco kept converting third downs with throws on the move to Steve Smith, Marlon Brown, Kamar Aiken and a person named Phillip Supernaw. Flacco is playing in the manner of a top-10 quarterback.

3. Ryan Tannehill’s inability to throw deep is the Achilles’ heel of the Miami offense. They assembled a 10-0 lead in the first quarter with short throws and inspired runs by Lamar Miller, but the Ravens sat to the brief stuff next. Tannehill however takes a long time to procedure and discover secondary choices, too generally looking in the manner of a statue. The Dolphins do not even attempt to throw deep.

Ray Rice wins appeal, instantly permitted return

Former Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice has taken a huge step nearer to a potential return to the NFL.

NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport first reported Friday that Rice won his appeal and has had his indefinite suspension in the league overturned, according to a source directly associated with the specific situation. Rice is instantly eligible to return by winning his appeal, Rapoport reports.

The NFL Media Group got Judge Barbara S. Jones’ overview and selection:

"In this arbitration, the NFL claims that Commissioner Goodell was misled when he disciplined Rice the first time. Because, after careful consideration of most the evidence, I’m not swayed that Rice lied to, or misled, the NFL at his June interview, I find the indefinite suspension was an abuse of discretion and should be vacated."

Like/Dislike: There is something about fantasy teams

He Is planning to beat us, right?

Slack the rear, man

Dude! Exactly what have you been doing?

Whenever I see "There Is Something About Mary" to the pay stations, it is possible to pretty much clear my schedule for the remaining night because I’m likely to view through the duration. (Even through the "Buttercup" video.) Happily the run to the pay stations lately finished prior to the football season began, or I might never get to your own questions on Twitter.

Texas ADVERTISING: Longhorns establish to cover stipend of $10,000 per sportsman

Texas football players might soon find themselves with a somewhat thicker wallet.

No, not thanks to Longhorns supporters, but as the school could be establish to supply a significant stipend in addition to what it is that they receive now.

Athletic director Steve Patterson, speaking in a forum in Washington D.C. on faculty sports, said the school is set to spend almost $6 million a year for a cost of attendance stipend for each student athlete and to comply with the recent O’Bannon opinion that’s still making its way through the court system.

That breaks down to about $10,000 per player at the school across all sports, nearly the maximum possible new rules would permit.

Good Jay Cutler shows up; Bears roll in Atlanta

The Chicago Bears and Atlanta Falcons both badly needed at win Sunday. The Bears played like a team that could stick around in a playoff race with a 27-13 road victory. Here’s what you need to know:

1. Despite all the preseason talk, the Falcons are one of the least "tough" teams in football. Chicago’s pass rush finally woke up because they were playing Atlanta’s dreadful line. Meanwhile, the Falcons got no pressure on Jay Cutler all day. He responded with 381 yards and no turnovers.

Former Browns GM: Ty Montgomery a likely first-round pick

There is plenty of distance between college football’s top players and the 2015 NFL Draft — not only the rest of the football season, but the scouting season as well. For now, though, things look good for Stanford wide receiver Ty Montgomery. Reese’s Senior Bowl executive director Phil Savage, the former general manager of the Cleveland Browns, likes what he sees from the senior.

"Ty will likely be a first-round pick because of his combination value as a receiver and return man, and with that said, should be able to get on the field as a rookie and help an NFL team right away," Savage wrote in the latest seniorbowl.com scouting report.

Oregon State assistant Mark Banker upset with USC"s linemen

Two Oregon State defensive tackles suffered knee injuries in last Saturday’s loss to USC, and Beavers defensive coordinator Mark Banker has questioned USC’s blocking techniques.

Starter Jalen Grimble will miss up to a month and backup Noke Tago is out for the season because of injuries they sustained against the Trojans. Banker said both of the injuries occurred on chop blocks that weren’t called; Grimble was injured on USC’s first offensive play of the second half and Tago was lost on USC’s second possession of the half.

"You don’t know if it was done on purpose or not," Banker told The Oregonian, "but I just think the technique was questionable."

Banker said that when Oregon State coaches scouted USC, they didn’t notice a tendency for the Trojans to chop block.

Judy Battista emphasizes the storylines and elements to pay attention to in Week 4, starting with one purported competitor’s Achilles’ heel and continuing with 10 more items to see below.

Randy Cross still sees the San Francisco 49ers closely between his broadcasting duties because, in the end, the three Super Bowl titles he won as an associate of the offensive line irrevocably tie him to the franchise and his former teammates. Cross says he’s more dispassionate now. He was close to former owner Eddie DeBartolo Jr., but as DeBartolo’s incredible time at the helm recedes farther into recollection, thus does Cross’ psychological bond to the 49ers.

Still, when Cross and his former teammates have discussed the 49ers before few weeks, it is been about exactly the same thing that appears to get coach Jim Harbaugh befuddled during a 1-2 beginning in which San Francisco has played well in the very first half and sagged disastrously in the second.

Brian Kelly expecting for selection on suspended players shortly

Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly said Tuesday that the hearings in the five players suspended in the team due to potential academic misconduct should finished by the conclusion of next week.

The quintet comprises three projected starters: cornerback KeiVarae Russell, wide receiver DaVaris Daniels and defensive end Ishaq Williams. Another two are safety Eilar Hardy and linebacker Kendall Moore. All but Hardy happen to be suspended since Aug. 15; Hardy was suspended Aug. 28.

Kelly made the remark at his weekly news conference. When asked if he’d an view of the procedure, Kelly said, "I do not have an opinion and I truly would not need to share it openly." He did say he was told last Friday that a committee had been formed to decide the innocence or guilt of the players.

The suspended players are attending courses, but Kelly has held them out of team meetings.

Ameer Abdullah: Jameis Winston has "long way to go" in adulthood

Nebraska running back Ameer Abdullah needs what Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston already has — a Heisman Trophy — but it was Abdullah doling out some serious guidance for Winston on Monday.

The two school stars both hail from Alabama and consider each other friends. They were high school competitions in the Birmingham region, however they attended several summer camps jointly and apparently prepared together at exactly the same fitness center.

Nevertheless, Winston has been no stranger to off-the-field problems, as well as the episode that resulted in his suspension from Florida State’s game against Clemson — Winston shouted an obscene phrase within the student union — has seemingly rankled his fellow Heisman Trophy candidate and buddy. The Cornhuskers star directed a message Monday directly at Winston: Grow up.

"(Winston is) a very intelligent young man," Abdullah told the Associated Press. & quot; But he’s made his fair share of errors. It gets to the point at which you are feeling like he needs to begin understanding and take things more seriously because these matters can change what the results are in his future."

Amari Cooper similar to Jordy Nelson, but more volatile

On a typical Saturday, I am bouncing around from channel to channel, getting a look at NFL possibilities in a number of different college football matches. This Saturday was distinct, though.

I focused only about the Florida-Alabama match since I was so intrigued by the matchup between Tide WR Amari Cooper and Gators CB Vernon Hargreaves III.

There Is nothing a scout loves more than to see two players which might be the very best at their various positions go head to head. It is the closest thing to repeating what they will find at another degree, and we had the opportunity to watch only that when Cooper and Hargreaves met on Saturday. One player was the clear winner because matchup. Here are my observations on this conflict and other interesting possibilities in the sport.

Buffalo Bills love breath of fresh air in favorable beginning to 2014

Week 3 of the 2014 NFL season is finally here — and as she does every week, Judy Battista emphasizes the storylines and elements to pay attention to, starting using a fresh lease on life for the Buffalo Bills franchise and continuing with 10 more items to observe below.

It was a couple of hours after Adrian Peterson had effectively been banished in the Minnesota Vikings, and several hours before the Carolina Panthers would do exactly the same to Greg Hardy. A barren expanse of news and mishandlings had engulfed the NFL for almost two weeks, sending standings plummeting and matches to the borders.

But for a short while, there was a tiny sliver of good news coming in the NFL. Terry Pegula’s purchase of the Buffalo Bills to get a reported $1.4 billion was approved by the NFL’s finance committee this week, a positive development squeezed in among so much negativity. Pegula, who has been media self-conscious as whoever owns the NHL’s Buffalo Sabres, prudently declined to answer questions after his acceptance was declared Wednesday, because he’s not yet been validated by the entire possession group. That probably saved him from being questioned how concerned he’s in regards to the league where he’s planning to invest so much.

West Virginia WR Kevin White turning scouts" heads

Count West Virginia’s Kevin White among school wide receivers gaining momentum as possibilities for the 2015 NFL Draft. Following a popular start to the season, the Mountaineers’ senior has attracted the interest of both NFL Media analysts and former Cleveland Browns general manager Phil Savage.

"For the NFL, he could be a legit prospective starter as an X (split end) because of his physical characteristics and is a player that will only improve as time goes on," Savage wrote in his latest scouting report for the Reese’s Senior Bowl. Meanwhile, in College Football 24/7’s latest version of "Sources Tell Us," scouts have gone so far as to liken White to eight-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald of the Arizona Cardinals. An NFL staff manager quit short of this, but said he could at least comprehend the comparison.

White gets the type of size (6-foot-3, 210 pounds) needed to manage the X position, which more typically takes a receiver to break from press coverage. Noticed Savage, "he’s a physical stride coming off the line of scrimmage as well as the upper body strength to overcome corners and increase standing on intermediate designs."

His creation this season continues to be remarkable through three matches. He’s amassed 32 receptions, which ranks second in the NCAA behind Alabama’s Amari Cooper, and 460 receiving yards, which likewise ranks second in the whole country behind Baylor’s KD Cannon. White is a senior, so 2014 signifies his last opportunity to reveal NFL scouts what he can do in match actions. Given that he is already only three grabs away from matching his season total from a year ago, it’s clear that he’s taking complete advantages thus far.

West Virginia CB Daryl Worley suspended forever

West Virginia will be without one of its own essential defensemen Saturday when it confronts Oklahoma in a large early-season Big 12 match.

The school announced Monday night that beginning cornerback Daryl Worley has been suspended indefinitely for a violation of team rules. Worley (6-foot-1, 199 pounds), a sophomore, had began the first three matches of the season after serving as a part time starter last season as an actual freshman.

Worley is the Mountaineers’ best cover corner and contains both of WVU’s interceptions this year. Juniors Jaylon Myers or Ricky Rumph will take his position in the starting lineup. Rumph (5-11, 184) has played in all three matches this year. Myers (6-2, 195) is a former junior college transfer who redshirted last season , and it has played in two matches this year.

WVU’s pass defense continues to be unstable and Worley’s lack will damage against the Sooners (3-0). A fast peek in the stats reveals that WVU (2-1) is enabling 204.7 passing yards per game, but that figure is skewed because FCS foe Towson threw for only 80 on the Mountaineers. In their other two matches, WVU gave up 250 to Alabama and 284 to Maryland. One positive, however, is the fact that WVU has permitted only two TD passes.

Penn State"s Christian Hackenberg throws for 309 in recovery

Sophomore Christian Hackenberg did not throw a TD pass Saturday night, but he still led Penn State to a 13-10 triumph at Rutgers in the Big Ten opener for both.

Penn State, which trailed 10-0 at halftime, is 3-0 for the very first time since 2009. It was the fourth game-winning drive of Hackenberg’s profession in the fourth quarter or overtime.

Hackenberg threw for 309 yards — the sixth 300-yard game of his career — and has supplied nearly all the violation for the Nittany Lions in every one of the matches because their rushing attack is terrible. Penn State managed only 68 rushing yards Saturday and has ran for a total of 231 yards this year.

Hackenberg finished 25-of-44, but was sharp in the match-winning drive, going 3-of-4 for 84 yards. He hit Geno Lewis for gains of 53 and 23 yards, with the 23-yarder coming on a third-and-12 play and setting Penn State upward for a first-and-goal in the 6. Bill Belton scored from the 5 two plays after with 1:13 left. The 23-yarder also came one play after a holding call wiped out a TD pass.

Jameon Lewis turns touchdown trick again for Mississippi State

Maybe Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen ought to simply let Jameon Lewis keep throwing passes until among them does not go for a touchdown.

The Bulldogs wide receiver threw a 24-yard touchdown pass to quarterback Dak Prescott to end a nifty double pass as MSU knocked off South Alabama, 35-3, on Saturday. But it will not have come as too much of a surprise to the Jaguars, because Lewis was 3 for 3 as a passer with three touchdowns last season.

For his career, the wide receiver’s track record as a quarterback on trick plays is nothing short of perfection: Four efforts, four completions, four touchdowns, totaling 108 yards. His career passer rating now stands at a staggering 656.8. And it really dropped with Saturday’s throw.

Seemingly, Lewis’ job as a passer hasn’t made the playbook. And why should it?
