Ravens outclass Dolphins in critical AFC matchup

The Baltimore Ravens and Miami Dolphins met Sunday in a matchup of wouldbe AFC rivals. Joe Philbin’s squad was totally coordinated in a 28-13 Ravens success.

1. Elvis Dumervil was the most effective player in the field Sunday, and Joe Flacco was a close second. Let us begin with all the Ravens’ defense. Despite losing two more cornerbacks to harm (Danny Gorrer and Anthony Levine), the Ravens just gave up three points in the last three quarters as a result of ferocious pass rush. Dumervil controlled Dallas Thomas for 3.5 sacks, quitting multiple drives. Terrell Suggs added 1.5 sacks. Ryan Tannehill regularly held the ball a long time, getting knocked down nine times.

2. Flacco has played near perfect soccer the previous couple of weeks. Torrey Smith was quite small due to harm (no catches) but Flacco kept converting third downs with throws on the move to Steve Smith, Marlon Brown, Kamar Aiken and a person named Phillip Supernaw. Flacco is playing in the manner of a top-10 quarterback.

3. Ryan Tannehill’s inability to throw deep is the Achilles’ heel of the Miami offense. They assembled a 10-0 lead in the first quarter with short throws and inspired runs by Lamar Miller, but the Ravens sat to the brief stuff next. Tannehill however takes a long time to procedure and discover secondary choices, too generally looking in the manner of a statue. The Dolphins do not even attempt to throw deep.

Son of former NFL star Bryan Cox shines for Florida in road win

Bryan Cox Jr. picked quite a day to play a lot like his father did during his NFL career.

The son of former All-Pro linebacker Bryan Cox came up with three sacks to lead a 10-9 win in a road game at rival Tennessee that threatened to send the Florida Gators’ season into an early tailspin.

Bryan Cox Sr., of course, had an impressive 12-year NFL career playing for the Miami Dolphins, Chicago Bears and New York Jets, among others. The three-time All-Pro, currently the Atlanta Falcons‘ defensive line coach, amassed 51.5 career sacks, but as a college player at Western Illinois and a fifth-round draft pick, he never found himself on the center of a stage quite like his son was on Saturday.

Bryan Cox Jr.’s first sack of the season came at a big third-down moment, as he dropped Volunteers quarterback Justin Worley for a loss of 13 to force a punt in the second quarter. Cox, a redshirt sophomore who had two career sacks entering the game, sacked Worley again on third down in the third quarter to force a field goal attempt, and his third sack set up a 3rd-and-9 and helped force one of eight Tennessee punts.

Jamaal Charles lively for Chiefs against Patriots

The Chiefs are finding a boost when they want it most with the New England Patriots in town.

Jamaal Charles is active for Kansas City’s match Monday night at Arrowhead Stadium. An ankle injury forced the running back to miss last week’s 34-15 victory over the Miami Dolphins, with Knile Davis taking 32 carries for 132 yards along with a touchdown in Charles’ lack.

Charles has taken the ball only nine times for 23 yards in the 2014 season.

Meanwhile, the Chiefs will likely be without safety Eric Berry (ankle) and running back DeAnthony Thomas (hamstring), who are both inactive.

Aaron Rodgers told everyone to R-E-L-A-X last week, and that turned out to be great guidance. In the end, even in the eternally unpredictable NFL — the Arizona Cardinals and Cincinnati Bengals, once league laughingstocks, are now the sole undefeated teams of 2014, for instance — some things do not change all that much.

Every year, September is the month that deceive us more than any other. Seldom do teams go wire to wire using their dominance, as the Seahawks and Broncos did last season. A lot more common is the kind of gut-churning unevenness we have already seen in 2014: how the Dolphins can look dominant in a single match, disoriented the next, and then dominant again in London after an unusually tumultuous week, or how Kirk Cousins can ignite and extinguish a quarterback controversy in Washington within the period of four days.

But while teams are still figuring out their identities early in the season, quarterback is the only position at which catch judgments are inevitable — and, possibly, the closest to reality.

Raiders" Derek Carr harm, replaced by Matt McGloin

A miserable day for the Oakland Raiders was exacerbated when quarterback Derek Carr was sidelined with an obvious left ankle/knee injury in the 3rd quarter.

Carr’s knee was turned at the conclusion of a scramble. Despite a heavy limp, he remained in for one more play before it became clear that he could not place any weight on the leg.

He was quickly sent to the locker room for X rays and is formally questionable to return.

The rookie authored an impressive opening touchdown drive vs. the Miami Dolphins, but neglected to transfer the offense over the next two quarters.

Sky Sports expands deal with NFL five years

LONDON — The NFL is getting set to play its ninth regular season match in London on Sunday when the Oakland Raiders play host to the Miami Dolphins at their adopted home of Wembley Stadium.

While the long term target for international growth said by Commissioner Roger Goodell is a long-term team in London, the NFL took a critical short term measure in britain on Thursday with the announcement of a brand new TV deal.

Sky Sports, which has broadcast live NFL games in britain since 1995, has extended its deal by five years, adding the rights to air Monday Night Football. Together with the inclusion of Monday Night Football (played in the first hours of Tuesday morning to get a UK audience), the broadcaster will give British NFL enthusiasts the opportunity to look at as many as 80 live matches annually.

Sky Sports’ coverage may also contain all matches in the NFL’s International Series as teams go to great britain for regular season match ups, which has seen sell out competitions at Wembley since 2007.

Branden Albert, Miami Dolphins" new offensive line start strong

By his standards, this wasn’t good enough. His new team was trailing the New England Patriots. His new offense was making too many mistakes. And most importantly, in his mind, the offensive line wasn’t doing its job of keeping Ryan Tannehill clean.

So Miami Dolphins left tackle Branden Albert sought out the quarterback during the second quarter of Sunday’s contest to deliver the most unnecessary apology Tannehill has likely ever heard.

"I’m sorry, man," Albert told him. "We need to keep you cleaner. We need to do a better job."

LSU"s Travin Dural"s status unclear after car wreck

LSU wide receiver Travin Dural, the Tigers’ top downfield offensive threat, suffered minor injuries in an automobile accident Saturday night in Baton Rouge, putting his status for LSU’s upcoming game against Louisiana-Monroe in doubt.

The third-year sophomore was hit from behind in the wreck, according to theadvertiser.com, and suffered a forehead gash requiring stitches as well as a bump on the head. The report noted Dural missed practice both Monday and Tuesday and did not meet with media, and with no comment from LSU coach Les Miles, it is uncertain whether Dural could be available to play Saturday.

Dural (6-2, 192) has exploded early in the season for LSU to mitigate the loss of two prized NFL draft picks in Odell Beckham and Jarvis Landry. The New York Giants made Beckham the 12th pick of the first round, and Landry went to the Miami Dolphins in the second round (No. 63 overall). After catching just seven passes as a freshman backup last year, Dural already has six catches for a staggering 291 yards and four touchdowns in two LSU wins. His yards-per-catch average of 48.5 leads the entire NCAA, and he led LSU in the same category last year at 20.7.

In short, preseason concerns about LSU’s wide receivers have waned thanks entirely to Dural. As such, a Dural absence of any length would add a troublesome variable to the development of first-year starting quarterback Anthony Jennings. As a third-year sophomore, Dural could conceivably enter the NFL draft as early as 2015, but could remain at LSU for as many as two years after this one.

Ben Roethlisberger, Steelers fend off furious Browns rally

This is the backstory to one of the great moments of Week 1, the Pittsburgh Steelers‘ response to a frantic second-half rally by the Cleveland Browns. The Steelers’ dramatic win, as well as the Philadelphia Eagles‘ come-from-behind win over the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Miami Dolphins‘ denial of the New England Patriots are nominees for the GMC Never Say Never Moment of the week. Cast your vote for the GMC Never Say Never Moments of Week 1.

Ben Roethlisberger

Once upon a time, Cleveland Browns-Pittsburgh Steelers was one of the NFL’s greatest rivalries. Separated by less than 150 miles and a long-time connection in the AFC North (and AFC Central before that) perpetuated the regional fervor. However, ever since returning from their hiatus in 1999, the Browns have an abysmal 5-27 record against their rivals. During that run, the Steelers finally evened up their all-time record against the Browns and now hold a 68-57 edge in the rivalry that dates back to 1950, thanks to Week 1’s dramatic victory.
