South Carolina"s Mike Davis anticipated to go through "Senior Day"

South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier said Tuesday night he anticipates several juniors, including star tailback Mike Davis, to take part in this season’s "Senior Day."

While a junior participating in a Senior Day event is not always a certain indication that the player is turning professional, it usually is a great index.

"I believe (tailbacks) Mike Davis and Brandon Wilds and, possibly, (offensive tackle) Brandon Shell, I’m not certain, perhaps some of the defensive men," Spurrier told The State newspaper of Columbia after the Gamecocks’ practice Tuesday. & quot;We will have several juniors do the senior walk, and then they’re going to make the choice after whether to go or come back. When they would like to walk twice, that is good, also. We have had several men do that."

South Carolina’s "Senior Day" is Nov. 22, against South Alabama.

Political advertisement compares Lane Kiffin to state representative

College football at its worst can be a dirty match.

But never quite as filthy as politics.

>> Where’s Alabama in CFB 24/7’s Top 25 Power Rankings?

As Alabama travels to Tennessee this weekend, offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin is likely to make his first return to the Knoxville, Tenn., campus since unceremoniously bolting the Volunteers’ head coaching job after only one season for the same function at Southern Cal.

Pharoh Cooper blowtorches Vanderbilt as Gamecocks triumph

South Carolina wide receiver Pharoh Cooper demonstrated why he is among the very versatile athletes in the SEC in leading the Gamecocks to a 48-34 win Saturday at Vanderbilt.

The sophomore led all receivers with 10 catches for 114 yards, and added another 74 yards in the ground on only two carries. His 188 total yards signified his most productive game of the season. It ended up being a breakout performance, and College Football 24/7 called Cooper would be a breakout player in the SEC this season.

His 10 catches were a career high. Cooper now leads the Gamecocks in receptions with 21 for 244 yards.

Gamecocks quarterback Dylan Thompson completed 22 of 34 passes for 237 yards and three touchdowns, though star running back Mike Davis was held to less than 100 yards again (17 rushes for 84 yards). Opposing defenses have keyed on Davis greatly this season, and if this continues, Cooper’s chance for huge plays should come with this.

Arizona State QB Taylor Kelly will miss confrontation with UCLA

Arizona State quarterback Taylor Kelly, who has thrown 63 TD passes and rushed for 12 more TDs since becoming the Sun Devils’ starter for the 2012 season, will miss a minumum of one match using a foot injury.

Kelly (6-foot-2, 210 pounds), a senior, suffered the injury in the Sun Devils’ win over Colorado this past Saturday. He’ll miss Arizona State’s Pac-12 South confrontation with UCLA on Sept. 25.

Junior Mike Bercovici will replace Kelly against UCLA, but Sun Devils coach Todd Graham said he is not going to modernize Kelly’s status until after that match.

The UCLA competition is the beginning of an enormous four-match stretch for the Sun Devils, who face off against, in order, USC, Stanford and Washington after they play the Bruins. Therefore, an extended absence by Kelly could mean the Sun Devils will fall too far behind in the Pac-12 South race.

Jameon Lewis turns touchdown trick again for Mississippi State

Maybe Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen ought to simply let Jameon Lewis keep throwing passes until among them does not go for a touchdown.

The Bulldogs wide receiver threw a 24-yard touchdown pass to quarterback Dak Prescott to end a nifty double pass as MSU knocked off South Alabama, 35-3, on Saturday. But it will not have come as too much of a surprise to the Jaguars, because Lewis was 3 for 3 as a passer with three touchdowns last season.

For his career, the wide receiver’s track record as a quarterback on trick plays is nothing short of perfection: Four efforts, four completions, four touchdowns, totaling 108 yards. His career passer rating now stands at a staggering 656.8. And it really dropped with Saturday’s throw.

Seemingly, Lewis’ job as a passer hasn’t made the playbook. And why should it?

Steve Spurrier: If you ever hit a woman, you won"t play for me

South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier was his usual plain-speaking self Tuesday when he was asked about the Ray Rice situation.

"If you ever hit a girl, you’re not going to play on our team," he said during his weekly news conference. "You’re finished."

Spurrier is in his 10th season at South Carolina, and he said he has booted two players for that kind of situation. "One was about seven years ago, the other was about nine years ago," he said.

"We’re not going to have any player on our team that’s done that," he said. "I can’t understand why every coach doesn’t have that rule and why every company doesn’t have that rule for their employees. I think it could put a pretty good end to this stuff. Really, it’s amazing that America has sort of put up with it or compromised, but that is something that should never happen."

Seventeen things you need to know from Week 2 CFB action

Southern Cal was involved, so you knew something bizarre would happen.

How about Trojans athletic director Pat Haden coming down from the press box to argue with officials, presumably about USC’s Hayes Pullard being ejected for targeting, during a thrilling 13-10 win over Stanford. Even more bizarre, Haden said he received a text that USC coach Steve Sarkisian wanted him to come down.

This about sums it up.

Haden, of course, is a member of the College Football Playoff selection committee. And his presence on the sideline in the middle of a game that could easily have implications on the playoff field is exactly why selection committee rules mandate that members with ties to a specific school recuse themselves from the committee’s deliberations about that school.

Eleven things you need to know from Week 2 CFB action

Seven things you need to know from Week 2 CFB action

It was a feel-good week for much of college football in Week 2, as a seemingly endless supply of lopsided matchups provided some of the top programs in the country with more self-esteem than a therapist with a full-length leather couch.

To wit:

» Clemson forgot all about Georgia in beating South Carolina State 73-7.

» Alabama trounced Florida Atlantic 41-0 in just 52:07 of play. A lightning delay that became a lightning cancellation mercifully ended that one.
