Stefon Diggs suspended for event before Penn State match

Maryland star wide receiver Stefon Diggs continues to be suspended in the Terrapins’ next match, Nov. 15 against Michigan State, for his activities before last Saturday’s triumph over Penn State.

The Big Ten announced the suspension Monday day, saying Diggs broken the Big Ten’s sportsmanship policy.

Various media reports said Diggs touched an official in the face in a fracas ahead of the match. But Diggs had not been ejected and led Maryland with six receptions for 53 yards, and he also returned kicks and punts.

In addition to suspending Diggs, the league issued a public reprimand of Maryland coach Randy Edsall, saying Edsall neglected to command his team prior to the match, when Terps players started a confrontation with Penn State players. The league said, "Officials did a great job of including the situation once it began, and luckily the incident didn’t escalate any additional."

Brady Hoke says he has "great" relationship with Dave Brandon

Michigan coach Brady Hoke said Wednesday that Devin Gardner will be the Wolverines’ starting quarterback for Saturday’s game at Rutgers, and he also said that he and Michigan athletic director Dave Brandon have "a great relationship."

Hoke was peppered with questions about his relationship with Brandon at his regular Wednesday news conference. In a statement released by Michigan about injured quarterback Shane Morris at about 1 a.m. Tuesday, Brandon said Morris had "a probable, mild concussion." Monday morning, during his regularly scheduled media event, Hoke had said Morris didn’t have a concussion.

In addition, during his Monday media session, Hoke had said he had not spoken with Brandon. But the statement from Brandon said Brandon had "numerous meetings since Sunday morning to thoroughly review the situation that occurred at Saturday’s football game regarding student-athlete Shane Morris. I have met with those who were directly involved and who were responsible for managing Shane’s care and determining his medical fitness for participation."

Hoke was asked Wednesday if he felt he had been "hung out to dry" by Brandon.

Report: Jimbo Fisher no help to Jameis Winston"s stock

Not that Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston wanted any aid in damaging his standing with NFL scouts as a draft prospect, but FSU coach Jimbo Fisher will seemingly be a detriment to Winston’s scouting assessment at the same time.

» Bills QB Manuel mentoring Winston

NFL personnel guys possess a definite memory of Fisher supplying them having a enthusiastic recommendation of former LSU quarterback JaMarcus Russell when Fisher was the Tigers’ offensive coordinator, and given Russell’s swift ouster in the league, scouts are unlikely to be purchasing what Fisher might be selling regarding Winston, according to Sports Illustrated.

"He told the whole NFL that JaMarcus Russell was an excellent child," a source familiar with the situation told SI. & quot;He was a [expletive] then."

Steve Spurrier: If you ever hit a woman, you won"t play for me

South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier was his usual plain-speaking self Tuesday when he was asked about the Ray Rice situation.

"If you ever hit a girl, you’re not going to play on our team," he said during his weekly news conference. "You’re finished."

Spurrier is in his 10th season at South Carolina, and he said he has booted two players for that kind of situation. "One was about seven years ago, the other was about nine years ago," he said.

"We’re not going to have any player on our team that’s done that," he said. "I can’t understand why every coach doesn’t have that rule and why every company doesn’t have that rule for their employees. I think it could put a pretty good end to this stuff. Really, it’s amazing that America has sort of put up with it or compromised, but that is something that should never happen."
