Reports: Michigan AD Dave Brandon to step down Friday day

Beleaguered Michigan athletic director Dave Brandon apparently will step down Friday day.

The school has scheduled at 1:30 p.m. ET news conference, and various media reports have Brandon stepping down.

Brandon, 62, has become the ADVERTISEMENT since 2010. He’s a Michigan alum and was the chairman of the board of Domino’s Pizza when he was hired by Michigan.

He hired Brady Hoke as football coach, and Hoke undoubtedly is to the hot seat. The time of Brandon’s resignation could throw the anticipated Michigan training investigation into chaos, as it will be hard to engage a fresh trainer without that trainer understanding who his supervisor will be.

Penn State RB Bill Belton hinted that Rutgers isn't big time

Penn State tailback Bill Belton is a New Jersey native and was recruited by Rutgers, but he left the state because "I wanted to play big-time college football, so I came to Penn State."

With the Scarlet Knights playing host to Penn State this week in their first-ever Big Ten game, Belton’s comment — made at the Big Ten Media Days event — has been, um, discussed by Rutgers players. Belton went to high school in Sicklerville, about 75 miles from Rutgers’ campus.

"That definitely made its way around the locker room," Rutgers safety Johnathan Aiken told the Newark Star-Ledger. "One of my coaches even told me, so that’s something that we’ve seen."

Aiken also said, "I’m excited that I get a chance to play against some ‘big-time’ competition. That’s what I’m excited about."

Derek Anderson excellent in unlikely start for Panthers

In a perfect world, every team would start its season at home, with the support of starved fanbases hungry for the start of another promising campaign. But of course, we need road teams to complete a matchup. Visitors won six of 13 games Sunday, and as it is with every game away from home, rarely is it ever easy. These three players made it look a little less difficult.

Anderson hadn’t sniffed the starting lineup since 2010, when he was the starter for the Arizona Cardinals. It was during that same season Anderson was caught laughing on the sidelines during a blowout loss to the 49ers on Monday Night Football, which spawned the memorable "that’s fine" postgame press conference. That pretty much explained how Anderson’s tenure with the Cardinals came to an end.

Since then, Anderson has disappeared to the sidelines with a headset and clipboard as a backup with Carolina, but when Panthers coach Ron Rivera made the tough decision to sit usual starter Cam Newton due to a rib injury, Anderson was forced into duty — and he shined. Anderson completed 24 of 34 attempts for 230 yards and two touchdowns as the Panthers earned a somewhat unlikely road victory at Tampa Bay in Week 1.
