James Harrison and Dick LeBeau: Reunited also it feels so great

PITTSBURGH — They are not prone to displays of emotion, these guys.

They do not talk about feelings or throw around mushy sentiments and they strive, Dick LeBeau and James Harrison both, to describe their football partnership in exact impassionate words.

So good. Leave the emotion outside. And only inquire James Harrison if he believes his profession would’ve taken an alternate shape had he played not in Dick LeBeau’s defense, but in another guy’s.

"I do not understand," he says, "if I would’ve had a profession."

Reports: Michigan AD Dave Brandon to step down Friday day

Beleaguered Michigan athletic director Dave Brandon apparently will step down Friday day.

The school has scheduled at 1:30 p.m. ET news conference, and various media reports have Brandon stepping down.

Brandon, 62, has become the ADVERTISEMENT since 2010. He’s a Michigan alum and was the chairman of the board of Domino’s Pizza when he was hired by Michigan.

He hired Brady Hoke as football coach, and Hoke undoubtedly is to the hot seat. The time of Brandon’s resignation could throw the anticipated Michigan training investigation into chaos, as it will be hard to engage a fresh trainer without that trainer understanding who his supervisor will be.

Cody Fajardo place to join Colin Kaepernick in NCAA record books

Nevada senior quarterback Cody Fajardo is going to join an NCAA fraternity so exclusive that it just has one other member.

» Bowl projections: Nevada to Potato Bowl?

As Well As another member is the San Francisco 49ers’ Colin Kaepernick, whom Fajardo succeeded as Nevada’s quarterback.

Fajardo (6-foot-2, 215 pounds) has 3,021 career rushing yards and is 25 yards shy of 9,000 career passing yards; the only quarterback in FBS history to have the 3,000/9,000 double is Kaepernick, who passed for 10,098 yards and rushed for 4,112 yards at Nevada from 200710.

Lookout: I do not understand if Oregon"s Marcus Mariota is alpha male

It Is the occupation of NFL scouts, and by extension, the general managers who supervise them, to discover defects in school possibilities.

They all have them — some more noticeable than others — as well as a failure to identify them accurately can establish itself into a wasted draft pick. Therefore, even the top-notch prospects that are considered surefire first-round draft picks will get their share of examination, even supposing it’s more microscopic — or as the case might be, myopic — in nature.

Enter Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota, who has 24 touchdowns to only one interception this season, but according to one NFL scout may be overly fine for the NFL. Yep, overly fine.

"Like in case you hit him in the gut, he might apologize to you personally," the scout told Sports Illustrated’s Interior Read. & quot;I simply do not understand if he is that alpha male that you are looking for. The child’s kind of a fly on the wall type of man. Physically, he is actually gifted, but it is likely to have some time. In the event you are expecting him to come in and be your savior year one, I do not believe that is going to be it."

Prescott also said, "I am good. I do not believe I Will have anything wrong with me for the Arkansas game. I will be good."

No matter what goes on at Gillette Stadium on Sunday, the Denver Broncos will be the top team in the NFL and needs to be considered the team to overcome as we look toward Super Bowl XLIX.

Peyton Manning and these Broncos are similar to the Miami Heat during LeBron James’ stay in South Beach. Fairly or unfairly, it is about getting to championships and winning titles. Ankle injury sidelines Lions" Calvin Johnson vs. Falcons

The Detroit Lions will again be without star receiver Calvin Johnson.

Megatron tested out his ankle pregame, running around the field at Wembley Stadium in London, where the Lions will take to the Atlanta Falcons, but the wide receiver was not able to play. NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported the Lions’ hope was to get Johnson a complete month of rest, per a source told of the Lions’ selection.

it’ll be the third consecutive missed match for Johnson. Detroit, 5-2, won the preceding two tussles. Yet, Matthew Stafford as well as the Lions’ offense have fought without their Pro Bowl receiver.

There was some confidence that Megatron, who had been restricted in practice all week, could play before the international crowd. Finally, the Lions determined the most wise move was to give their playmaker an additional week of rest. They expect to have Johnson back in the field following their Week 9 bye.

Josh Robinson"s stunning runs help Mississippi State to win

No. 2-ranked Mississippi State received a bit of a panic Saturday, but running back Josh Robinson set the actual panic in Kentucky’s shield.

The junior rushed for 198 yards on 23 carries and two touchdowns as the Bulldogs survived a 45-31 road triumph that was closer than the final score suggested. MSU TE Christian Holmes returned an onside kick for a touchdown late in the fourth quarter after Robinson’s 73-yard touchdown run before in the quarter helped give the Bulldogs some much-needed breathing room.

The 73-yarder might have been Robinson’s longest & most impactful run, but it most definitely was not his finest of the day. That distinction goes to the scamper that featured seven broken tackles. Not amazingly, it was Kentucky defensive end Bud Dupree, an NFL draft prospect plus among the greatest athletes to the field Saturday, who ultimately corralled Robinson:

Arkansas pulls off lineman-to-long snapper TD pass

Arkansas pulled off the kind of craziness normally allowed for backyard football matches among the bros.

Arkansas’ 350-pound offensive guard Sebastian Tretola lined up at quarterback in a unbalanced line shotgun configuration and completed a six-yard TD pass to Alan D’Appollonio. D’Appollonio, it needs to be said, is the Razorbacks’ long snapper. The effect is an offensive lineman-to-long snapper, fat-man-throws-TD, once in a lifetime occasion.

In the 2nd quarter of its own match against Alabama-Birmingham, Arkansas confronted a fourth-and-goal in the UAB 6-yard line. That is when the Razorbacks dialed up the magic.

Now, have a look at the insanity from a different perspective.

The San Francisco 49ers and Seattle Seahawks faced off in a epic NFC Championship Game last January, with the ‘Hawks reigning supreme and carrying on to demolish the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XLVIII.

Naturally, both NFC West powers entered this season with great expectations. Seven weeks in, though, things are not going as intended for either squad. The Seahawks only lost their second straight match (to lowly St. Louis, no less), dropping the defending champs to 3-3. Meanwhile, San Francisco was blown off the field in Denver, leaving the 4-3 49ers 1.5 matches off the Arizona Cardinals’ first place tempo. In case the season ended today, neither the ‘Hawks nor the Niners would make the postseason. This begs a simple question …

Which purported NFC West juggernaut is prone to miss the playoffs: Seattle or San Francisco?
